The Joey and Toby Tanenbaum Family
Gamma Knife Centre:
On September 20th, 2005, the Joey and Toby Tanenbaum Family Gamma Knife
Centre was officially dedicated and opened at the Toronto Western Hospital
(TWH) within the University Health Network (UHN). The Gamma Knife Centre
at TWH, the first of its kind in the province of Ontario, was made possible
through the philanthropic efforts of Joey and Toby Tanenbaum. The Gamma
Kfnie Centre. The Gamma Knife Centre represents a unique collaboration
between the Neuroscience Program at the Toronto Western Hospital and the
Radiation Medicine Program at Princess Margaret Hospital. The Gamma Knife
is a specialized equipment for intracranial radiosurgery, a non-invasive
method for treating brain disorders. It delivers a single, high dose of
radiation to an intracranial target. This technology makes it possible to
administer a high radiation dose to the diseased area, minimizing the risk
of damaging healthy tissue.
The Gamma Knife unit at TWH is currently being used to benefit citizens of
Ontario suffering from a broad range of neurological and neurosurgical
disorders including arteriovenous malformations, benign brain tumours such
as acoustic neuromas, meningiomas, pituitary tumors, chordoma, and glomus
tumours, movement disorders such as Parkinson disease, pain syndromes such
as trigeminal neuralgia and epilepsy.
Inquiries regarding patient referrals can be made to the program
co-ordinators: Dr Mark Bernstein (Neurosurgeon TWH), and Dr Cynthia Menard
(Radiation Oncologist, PMH) at 416-603-5445. Faxed referrals can be send
