Academic Chairs and Funds

The academic productivity of the Division of Neurosurgery has led to the establishment of a number of Academic Chairs and Funds to support a variety of programs. These Chairs and Funds can be enumerated as follows:

1. The Dan Family Chair in Neurosurgery
Established in 1994 by Dr. Charles Tator through the generous support of Leslie Dan (Novopharm Inc.) and family, The Dan Family Chair in Neurosurgery is a $2 million endowed fund which supports academic activities within the Division of Neurosurgery. The first Chair holder was Dr. Tator. The current Dan Family Chair holder is James T. Rutka.

2. Fondation Baxter et Alma Ricard Chair in Cerebrovascular Neurosurgery
Through the efforts of Dr. William Lougheed, the Fondation Baxter et Alma Ricard Chair in Cerebrovascular Neurosurgery was established in 1996 as a $2 million endowed fund to support academic activities in cerebrovascular neurosurgery at the Toronto Western Hospital, and the University of Toronto. This Chair supports the Bi-Annual Lougheed microvascular neurosurgery course. The first and current Chair holder is Chris Wallace.

3. Harold J Hoffman/Shoppers Drug Mart Chair in Pediatric Neurosurgery
In recognition of the many significant contributions of Dr. Harold Hoffman to the field of Pediatric Neurosurgery and his care of patients at The Hospital for Sick Children over his 35 years of neurosurgical practice, Mr. David Bloom (President and CEO Shoppers Drug Mart) on behalf of Shoppers Drug Mart established the $2 million endowed Harold J Hoffman/Shoppers Drug Mart Chair in Pediatric Neurosurgery at The Hospital for Sick Children in 1997. This annual interest from this endowed chair helps to support academic activities in the Division of Neurosurgery at The Hospital for Sick Children. The current Chair holder is James Drake.

4. Ron Tasker Chair in Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery
Following the retirement of Ron Tasker from active neurosurgical practice, the University Health Network and Medtronic Inc have made contributions to establish a $2 million endowment fund in honour of Ron Tasker for the purposes of supporting academic activities in stereotactic and functional neurosurgery. This Chair was officially inaugurated in November, 2000, and the inaugural Chair holder is Andres Lozano.

5. Krembil Chair in Neural Repair and Regeneration
In 2002, Linda and Robert Krembil established the Krembil Chair in Neural Repair and Regeneration as part of their generous gift to Neurosciences at the Toronto Western Hospital within the University Health Network. The Chair was established to develop a strongly translationally oriented research program in neurotrauma with a focus on spinal cord injury, and to facilitate the recruitment of key neuroscientists with molecular and cellular aspects of neural repair and regeneration. The current Chair holder is Dr Michael G. Fehlings.

6. Alan and Susan Hudson Chair in Neuro-Oncology
Upon the retirement of Alan Hudson from a successful career as CEO of the University Health Network, the Foundations of the Toronto General and the Princess Margaret Hospitals each contributed $1 million to establish a $2 million chair in Neuro-Oncology to honour Alan and Susan Hudson. The current Chair holder is Ab Guha.

7. The Compeau Family Foundation/Charles H. Tator Chair in Spinal Cord Injury and Repair
Through contributions raised during the Spark of Life Campaign at the Toronto Western Hospital, and following generous donations from various sources, a $1 million endowment program has been established to support research into spinal cord injury and repair at The Toronto Western Hospital. Funds are still being added to this Endowment Program. Currently, funds derived from the Chair are being used to support Spinal Cord Injury research. The current Chair holder is Charles Tator.

8. James F. Crothers Family Fellowship in Peripheral Nerve Damage
This $1 million endowed Fellowship was established by Henry Vehovec and his wife Ann Louise Vehovec for the purpose of training graduate students in the field of peripheral nerve injury within the Division of Neurosurgery. Dr. Peter Dirks helped established the terms of reference for this Fellowship fund.

9. Warren Ho Memorial Scholarship Fund
Following the untimely death in August, 2000, of Dr. Warren Ho, resident in neurosurgery at the University of Toronto, a Scholarship fund has been established to support residents undergoing research rotations. The annual recipient of this Scholarship will have demonstrated outstanding leadership and humanitarian qualities that were synonymous with the life of Warren Ho.
