Introduction

The division of cardiac surgery at the University of Toronto is comprised of faculty based at four university affiliated teaching hospitals (Toronto General Hospital, Sunnybrook and Women's College Health Science Centre, St. Michael's Hospital, and The Hospital for Sick Children). In total this group performs approximately 4050 cardiac operations annually comprising adult acquired, adult congenital, and pediatric cases.

In addition, a wide range of basic and clinical research groups are actively studying such areas as causes of pulmonary hypertension, fetal surgery, myocardial protection, cardiac transplantation and surgery for acquired aortic valve disease. Annual funding for research exceeds $1.2 million.

Residency

Residency in cardiac surgery may be entered via two routes; a three year program after completion of general surgery or a six year program beginning after medical school clerkship. Both streams qualify successful candidates to sit the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada fellowship examinations for cardiac surgery.

Foreign applicants are invited to apply to the six year training program, by post only, and with written documentation of sponsorship from their University or government. Unfortunately, foreign applicants who do not have secured funding from their University or government cannot be considered at this time.

Foreign medical graduates who have not completed North American Internships, regardless of legal status in Canada, must have successfully completed their MCCE and must apply to the Pre-Entry Assessment Program if they wish to enter an accredited residency training program in Ontario.

In order to obtain information about the Pre-entry Assessment Program (PEAP), please check the College of physicians and Surgeons of Ontario Web site: www.cpso.on.ca. The PEAP is an evaluative period that lasts from 4 to12 weeks. If successful, the trainee will receive confirmation of an appointment as a "clinical trainee".

For information regarding evaluating examinations, contact The Medical Council of Canada at www.mcc.ca. Evaluating Examinations are held in March and September only and applicants must apply 6 months in advance.

Where applicable, candidates must complete a "Test for Spoken English" (TSE) with a score of 50 or greater and "Test for English as Spoken Language" (TOEFL) with a score of 580 or greater. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario requires a score of 237 or greater on this computer-based test. For more information, the mailing address is:

Clinical fellowships are also available at each hospital for recently qualified cardiac surgeons. Each hospital may accept up to three fellows annually (contact the Hospital Division Heads for more information).

The cardiac program is the largest in Canada, offering exposure in all of the subspecialty areas.
